August 2010
So far, August has been hot and mostly dry and you can find car shows and cruises, in multiples, daily.
We went on our day trip to Fredricktown on Saturday, 8/7/10, and rode the Fredricktown ferry across the Monongahela River and then we had an excellent lunch at the Riverside Inn. A side benefit of the stop at the Inn was that we got to see the owner’s private car collection in town – a Model A pickup, a 1931 Chrysler Sedan, a couple of Malibu’s and a Chevy Caprice convertible. On the trip back toward home, we stopped for dessert at Sarris Candies in Canonsburg. We enjoyed their old –fashioned ice cream parlor with sundaes and sodas and the unbelievable candy store. We spotted a Shay reproduction Model A, in the Sarris parking lot. Those that went had a good time and good food – it was two hours in old cars, each way – none with air conditioning, so it was somewhat a pioneer-type trip. Pictures are on the website.
Our next car cruise will be Wednesday, August 18th at the Kittanning Township Volunteer Firehall. The cruise will start at 4 PM, so we’ll start setup around 2 PM. If you have any contacts for goodie bag items, please ‘work’ them for some items for the cruise and please come and help out.
Our club picnic will be on Saturday, August 28th at Mahoning Lake Park – just below the spillway. The tour of the workings of the dam will start at 1 PM and the picnic will start at 2 PM. If you plan to tour the dam, let me know as soon as possible because I have to let the park ranger know a tour count by August 18th – remember, it was constructed in the 1930’s and there’s a lot of narrow, steep concrete steps inside the dam – if you tour it, be prepared for some exercise. Other area car clubs are invited to this picnic also, so it should be a good get-together. Kit-Han-Ne Car Club will supply the meat, buns, pop and table coverings. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish to share with others and their own table settings. Paved route directions from Baum, PA (by Tomahawk Trailers – formerly Cornman’s Trailer Sales), are enclosed with this newsletter.
Our two September cruises should be back at the Cadet/Sheetz site. If you’ve been by there recently, you’ll notice that the Cadet parking lot has a fresh pavement job and it matches in nice with the Sheetz site. Stay in touch and check the club website if you have internet access – we’ll keep you updated – this should end up about the ultimate cruise site with Sheetz offering in on the cruise events.
