KIT-HAN-NE Region AACA Car Club Directions to Mahoning Lake Park
This travel is an all-paved road travel, suitable for antique/classic cars, to Mahoning Creek Lake Park. If you encounter dirt roads, then you’re off-route. From the Graff bridge, about 21.6 miles total – from the on-ramp off route 66 to 422/66/28 north and east, about 21.4 miles total travel.
Proceed north on 28/66 toward New Bethlehem – at approximately 9.4 miles from the Graff Bridge, you will arrive at Baum and the Y intersection to Dayton. A landmark located at Baum is Tomahawk Trailer Sales, formerly the Cornman’s RV Sales. Take the Y, bearing to the right and proceed toward Dayton on the Baum Belknap road, SR 1018, for 5.4 miles to the stop sign at the T intersection with SR1025 (the SR1025 sign is directly in front of you, across the road). You are now in Belknap.
Make a left turn onto SR1025 and proceed 1 mile north to a stop sign at a Y intersection, but proceed off to your right, which is still SR1025. Sign at the stop sign says “right turn keep moving”.
Proceed on SR1025 an additional 1.3 miles to a right turn onto SR1010. Landmarks ahead of the SR1010 turn are that you are proceeding up and over a hill, and, on your right, there is a state highway sign stating “McWilliams 5” with a turn right arrow, indicating a turn onto SR1010. Across from the turn onto SR1010 is a nice farm and a house near the road. Make the right turn onto SR1010.
Travel SR1010 for approximately 3 miles. Landmarks on SR1010 are at 0.9 mile, off to your right, you’ll see the Mahoning dam structure – that’s where you’re headed, indirectly. Further on, you’ll cross the Curley Road intersection, the Church Road intersections, and the new concrete bridge over Mahoning Creek. At 0.4 mile past the new bridge, (not the first road to your right off the bridge – DIRT ROAD!), you’ll come to a hard right, almost backwards turn, onto T748.
Make the right turn onto T748. There is some loose gravel in this intersection. At this intersection, there is a well hidden, well deteriorated state sign that says “Mahoning Lake 3” with an arrow to the right, pointing to road T748.
T748 is a fair condition tar and chip road – older tar/chip job with no loose gravel or flying tar.
Proceed on T748 for approximately 1.4 miles to a Y intersection – bear to the right and stay on T748 for an additional 0.1 mile – make the left turn into the park. Park entrance is across from a beautiful red farm named Creek Bend Farm.
Proceed through the park, bearing to the right and downhill to the new playground – at the playground, the road splits into a Y – take the Y to the right and further downhill to the spillway parking below the dam. This is where we’ll picnic.
No need to worry about a dam failure (pun intended) – water level behind the dam only appears to be a few feet higher than the spillway side (in case you’re concerned about the possibility of flooding your car, or, having to swim out from the picnic site).
Beautiful picnic area with pavilion with tables, open air tables, charcoal grills, smaller older playground, restroom facilities, hopscotch, trails, paved parking. No electricity. Enjoy yourself and your tax dollars at work!
